Biographical History
Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Cannon was an Illinois lawyer and politician, who served in the United States Congress.
U.S. Representative (Republican) from Illinois' eighteenth district (1873-1891, 1893-1913 and 1915-1923). Speaker of the House in the 58th, 59th, 60th and 61st Congresses.
Danville, Ill. lawyer who served as congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives for 46 years between 1873 and 1923, was elected Speaker of the House from 1903-1911 and ran for the nomination of president at the Republican Convention in 1908. So autocratic in his use of the House rules to maintain power they became known as "Cannonism". After much controversy over the Stevens Bill, 1907, and the Payne Tariff Bill, 1909, angry Republicans joined Democrats to end the reign of Cannon. He remained in Congress until the end of 1922. Served on the Lincoln Memorial Commission, 1915-1919.
