Lawyer; Missouri state representative, 1889-1891; Missouri congressman, 1893-1895, 1897-1921; speaker, U.S. House of Representatives, 1911-1919.
James ("Champ") Clark, 1850-1921, was a U.S. representative from Missouri and Speaker of House. He was born near Lawrenceburg, Ky., and graduated from Bethany (W. Va.) College in 1873 and from Cincinnati Law School in 1875. He was president of Marshall College, Huntington, W. Va., in 1873-1874, and admitted to the bar in 1875. He later edited a country newspaper and practiced law and moved to Missouri where he was a city attorney and deputy prosecuting attorney until he began his career in politics in 1889.
Samuel Sydney McClure,1857-1949, was an editor, publisher, and founder of McClure's Magazine.
