George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens was founded by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union to to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington.
The Estate and Gardens first opened to the public in 1860.
The Mount Vernon includes the Mansion and other original structures; Washington's tomb; interpretive spaces like the Pioneer Farm, Gristmill and Distillery; Ford Orientation Center; Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, and the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon.
