Biographical History
The Subject Specialist Program at Gelman Library was instituted by University Librarian Sharon Rogers, and ran from summer 1985 until summer 1999. All librarians had to do collection development, faculty liaison, and research consultations, and many taught classes. In 1991 the then-acting University Librarian Debbie Masters instituted the coordinator/team leader format. Caroline Long was then the chief coordinator and Dan Barthell and Mary Faith Pankin were, along with Caroline, the team leaders. All librarians who did not report to the University Librarian or to an Associate University Librarian reported to a team leader, as well as a functional supervisor. The team leader was in charge of performance appraisal, with input from the functional supervisor, and in charge of planning the hours that each person would spend on various activities. Liz Harter replaced Dan Barthell in this leadership role until 1999, when the library was reorganized.
