Actress Vivien Leigh was born in Darjeeling, India, and returned to England with her parents after World War I. While attending a convent school, her mother took her to see a play, where she determined to become an actress. She had little experience before creating a sensation in the role of Scarlett O'Hara in the movie Gone With the Wind, and went on to a successful career in movies and plays. She won Academy Awards for Gone With the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire, and a Tony for the musical Tovarich.
