Biographical History

Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair was an American author, novelist, journalist, and political activist who wrote many books in several genres. He is most well-known for his exposé, The Jungle regarding conditions in Chicago's meat packing plants, which influenced the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Much of Sinclair's writing was related to the economic and social conditions of the early twentieth century. He was heavily involved in political affairs and ran unsuccessfully for the United States House of Representatives and Senate in the 1920s. Sinclair was married to Meta Fuller from 1902-1911, Mary Craig Kimbrough from 1913-1961, and Mary Elizabeth Willis from 1961-1967. Sinclair lived most of his life in California, though he eventually moved to New Jersey with his third wife and died there in 1968.

Sinclair's other writings include Oil! (1927), Boston (1928), the eleven book Lanny Budd series of historical novels, and several autobiographical accounts and collections. A lifelong socialist, Sinclair organized the EPIC (End Poverty in California) socialist reform movement during the economic crisis of the 1930s, and unsuccessfully ran as California's Democratic candidate for governor in 1934.

Upton Sinclair grew up in Baltimore and New York, surrounded by poverty, ambition, and idealism. He began writing adventure stories for pulps, and with confidence gained at CCNY and Columbia he graduated to more serious literary efforts. His most representative works combine muckracking journalism with the theme of idealistic opposition to unjust society. Perturbed by charges of socialism, he published his later works as well as many circulars and pamphlets himself. He was also politically active, and became the Democratic nominee for Governor of California in 1934.
