Biographical History
Classes in physical education for women were first conducted in 1894. Barbour gymnasium for women was completed in 1898, in expectation of which Eliza M. Mosher, M.D., was named professor of hygiene and was put in charge of the Women's Gymnasium. The Women's Athletic Association was organized in 1905, and in 1908/09 a women's athletic field (Palmer Field) was purchased and equipped. The regents established a Department of Physical Education and a Division of Hygiene and Public Health in 1929. The teacher training program in physical education became part of the School of Education when it became an independent unit in 1921. A master's program (1931) and a doctoral program (1940) were later added. Margaret Bell was appointed assistant professor of physical education, director of physical education for women and physician in the health service in 1923.
