Biographical History
Placement agency formed in 1929 with the merger of the Bureau of Appointments of the School of Education and the Senate Committee on Vocational Counsel and Placement.
The first Bureau of Appointments was created in 1898 by the faculty of Literature, Science and the Arts to aid graduates in finding teaching positions. In 1906, this bureau became part of the Department of Education within the Literary College. In 1926, the president appointed a committee on vocational guidance and placement that conducted research on occupations and characteristics of individual students, and started a placement service. In 1929, the two units were combined under the directorship of T. Luther Purdom as the Bureau of Appointments and Occupational Information. The bureau continued until 1952.
