Biographical History

This company began the settlement of Jackson, Clarke Co., Miss. Territory, that is now Jackson, Clarke Co., Ala. The town is located on the eastern bank of the Tombigbee River in southwest Ala., 110 miles north of Mobile.

The company was organized to make a Pine Level purchase, adopting articles of agreement on 1814 Dec. 25, and appointing as commissioners Peregrine T. Bayard, Benjamin J. Bedell, David White, David Taylor, and Reuben Saffold. The company changed the name of the town to Jackson on 1815 Dec. 31 thus changing the company's name as well, though the town was not incorporated by the Miss. Territorial legislature until 1816 Nov. 27. It was named in honor of General Andrew Jackson. The original treasurer of the company was Henry Potts, appointed 1815 Oct.12, who was succeeded by John P. Creagh on 1816 May 11, while the original secretary, Josiah P. Carney, was succeeded by Peregrin F. Bayard on the same date.
