Biographical History
The University of North Carolina (Rho) chapter of the Alpha Chi Sigma collegiate chemistry fraternity began in 1909 as the Order of the Khems. In 1912, the group joined the national Alpha Chi Sigma organization. The group is a professional chemistry fraternity, although it has social functions as well. The national fraternity is divided into collegiate and professional divisions, with the professional members providing guidance and information for the collegiate.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Rho Chapter of the Alpha Chi Sigma collegiate chemistry fraternity began in 1909 as the Order of the Khems. In 1910-1911, it was known as Chi Eta Mu. In 1912, it joined the national Alpha Chi Sigma organization as the Rho Chapter. Detailed background information on the group's history can be found in Maurice Bursey's book Carolina Chemists .
Alpha Chi Sigma is a professional chemistry fraternity, although the members regard it in many ways as a social fraternity as well.
