Biographical History

Elihu Root, born in Clinton, NY, attended Hamilton College (A.B., 1864, A.M. in course, 1867) and University Law School of New York. He served as member Alaskan Boundary Tribunal; United States District Attorney, Southern New York, 1883 - 85; Secretary of War, 1899 - 1904; Secretary of State, 1905 - 09; U.S. Senator from New York, 1909 - 15; Senior Counsel for the U.S., North Atlantic Fisheries Arbitration, The Hague, 1910; Ambassador at Head of Special Diplomatic Mission to Russia, 1917. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, 1912; Roosevelt Memorial Medal for Administration of Public Office, 1924; Woodrow Wilson Foundation Medal and Prize for Services to Peace, 1926. He was a member of the British Academy; Istitut de droit International; American Academy of Arts and Letters; Commission of International Justice appointed by Council of League of Nations to prepare plans for a permanent Court of International Justice; Commissioner Plenipotentiary for the U.S. in International Conference on the Limitation of Armaments; Committee of Experts convened at Geneva 1929 to revise Statute of Permanent Court.
