University of Glasgow (1451- : Glasgow, Scotland)

These are Economic History lecture notes, possibly a lecturer's own notes. There are 6 notebooks within a slipcase. On the slipcase is written in pencil "Dr James Cunnison? Alec Macfie?" The identification of the author of these notes is not certain. There is one letter within volume 6 addressed to Dr Cunnison, but without a comparison of handwriting it has not possible to assign these notes to Dr Cunnison. References within the notes would indicate that they were written after 1924.

The Fifth Centenary of the founding of the University of Glasgow , Scotland, was commemorated by a formal programme of celebrations, which took place over the period 19-21 June 1951 , although a variety of less formal activities were held around the formal programme, during the period 18-29 June 1951 .

A preliminary notice of the celebrations was sent out in December 1949 , followed by formal invitations in June 1950 , to approximately three hundred universities and fifty colleges and academies throughout the world. The formal celebrations opened on Tuesday 19 June 1951 with the Ceremony of Presentation of Addresses, at which the congratulatory addresses from the various universities, colleges, academies, learned societies and other bodies from which the delegates were drawn were presented.

This was followed by a commemorative service in Glasgow Cathedral. The Commemoration Day ceremony for conferring of Honorary Degrees took place on 20 June 1951 in St Andrews Hall, Charring Cross, Glasgow, and was followed by afternoon and evening receptions hosted by the Deacon-Convener and the Collector of the Trades House of Glasgow and the Lord Provost and Magistrates of the City of Glasgow respectively.

The Commemoration Oration was delivered in St Andrews Hall on 21 June 1901 , and was followed by an afternoon reception in the University. The evening programme included a dinner hosted by the Senatus Academicus at the Grosvener Restaurant on Gordon Street, Glasgow, and an 'At Home' hosted by Lady Hetherington, wife of the University Principal, for the wives of delegates at the College Rooms.
