Noros, Louis P., 1850-1927

Crew member of USS Jeannette departed San Francisco on July 8,1879 on an Arctic expedition, Captain George W De Long commanding. On September 9, 1879, ship became trapped in ice near Herald Island, Siberian coast. Ship subsequently was crushed and sank June 12, 1881. Louis Noros departed vessel in one of three cutters with Captain De Long and twelve other crewman, eventually arriving at Lena Delta where they made land-fall. On October 9, 1881, Louis Noros and William F C Nindemann were sent inland to seek assistance. The two men were picked up near Belun by Chief Engineer George W Melville who had departed USS Jeannette in one of the other three cutters. It was later discovered that Captain De Long and the remaining eleven crew members accompanying him had perished. The third cutter commanded by Lt Charles W Chipp was never found. Seaman Nindemann also received a Congressional Medal.
