Biographical History

George Stanley McGovern, a Representative and a Senator from South Dakota was born in Avon, South Dakota, July 19, 1922. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University, 1940-1942 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in June 1942. McGovern was elected to the United States Senate in 1962; reelected in 1968 and 1974 and served from January 3, 1963, to January 3, 1981. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Democratic presidential nomination in 1968 and 1984 and the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1972.

George S. McGovern was born on July 19, 1922 in Avon, South Dakota. He served in the following capacities: professor of history and political science, Dakota Wesleyan University, 1949 to 1953; executive secretary, South Dakota Democratic Party, 1953 to 1955; U.S. Congress, representative from South Dakota, 1956 to 1960; director of Food for Peace Program and special assistant to President John F. Kennedy, 1961 to 1962; U.S. Senator from South Dakota, 1963 to 1981; chairman for the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, 1968 to 1977; president of Middle East Policy Council; and U.S. representative to various United Nations agencies and conferences. McGovern received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000. He is the author of a number of books, including: The Colorado Coal Strike, 1913-14, 1953; War Against Want, 1964; Agricultural Thought in the Twentieth Century, 1967; A Time of War, A Time of Peace, 1968; (with Leonard Guttridge); The Great Coalfield War, 1972; An American Journey, 1974; Grassroots, 1978; Terry: My Daughter's Life and Death Struggle with Alcoholism, 1996; and The Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time, 2001.

Stephen G. Cary (1915-2002) graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933. He received a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in chemistry from Haverford in 1937 and a master's in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and served in the Civilian Public Service from 1942-1946. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary was an integral part of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). With Willis Weatherford, he served as chief of American Quaker Relief Operations in Europe from 1946-1948, overseeing work in 10 countries dealing with the aftermath of World War II. Cary was chairman of the AFSC from 1979-1991. Cary began his service to Haverford College as a member of the Board of Managers from 1955-1969. In 1969 he joined the staff as vice president of development, and became vice president of finance and development in 1974. He was named acting president of Haverford from 1977-1978. He served as senior vice president of the College from 1979-81 and was clerk of Haverford's faculty meetings during these three years.
