Biographical History
Norm Lyon was born on April 24, 1907 at Leonidas (Mich.). He graduated from Albion College in 1929. In 1930 he began working with the MPDTN. Norm also worked for two years with the Saginaw News as a bureau reporter. In 1936, Norm joined the MOGN at the time of the formation of Petroleum Publishers, Inc. He served as the publication's editor, except for brief intermissions, until 1947, when he returned to MPDTN. After serving for two years as Secretary of Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce in 1954, Norm returned to MOGN as Editor. Norm served as Editor unil 1972, when he retired to Fla. After retiring, Norm returned to Mich. to help new writers and supplied MOGN with his weekly column. Norm was a member of the Pere Marquette Club, a charter member and, later, president of the Mount Pleasant Kiwanis Club. He served for 12 years on the Mount Pleasant City Commission. Norm also served as mayor of Mount Pleasant, 1950-1951. He also served as Vice President of the Michigan Municipal League and on various boards. Norm married Phyllis Morrison (born on Dec. 20, 1908) on Dec. 25, 1930. Together they had two children: JoAnn Camp and Richard "Dick" Lyon. Phyllis taught fourth grade at Pullen Elementary School in Mount Pleasant and taught student teachers at CMU. Phyllis died on Feb. 2, 1989 in Fla. Norm died on Sept. 29, 1991 in Mount Pleasant. They are both buried in Mount Pleasant. (Information from the collection.)
