Biographical History

Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (b. October 25, 1888, Winchester, Virginia-d. March 11, 1957, Boston, Massachusetts) was a polar explorer and naval officer. He made a flight over the North Pole in 1926 and a flight over the South Pole in 1929. He led expeditions to the Antarctic in 1928-1930, 1933-1935, 1939-1940, 1946-1947, and 1955-1956. In 1939 he became commander of the United States Antarctic Service expedition to Antarctica.
