Biographical History

Moses Cleaveland was a Connecticut lawyer, legislator, and army officer who became the Director and agent for the Connecticut Land Company. Prior to leading its first surveying and exploring party into the Connecticut Western Reserve in 1795 and founding the City of Cleveland, Ohio in 1796, Cleaveland sought permission from the Six Nations to survey and settle the land that they traditionally controlled.

January 29, 1754 Born in Canterbury, Connecticut, second son of Aaron and Thankful Paine Cleaveland 1777 Graduated from Yale University and began practice of law in Canterbury 1777 Joined the Masons, at one time being the Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut February 1780 Commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army June 1781 Resigned Captaincy in United States Army 1789 Began the first of 14 sessions as a Connecticut State Representative 1790 Began the first of at least ten years as a Justice of the Peace in Canterbury 1794 Married Esther Champion, daughter of Henry Champion, by whom he had four children 1795 1796 Became Director and agent for the Connecticut Land Company, first surveying party in Western Reserve 1795 1796 Negotiated with Indians concerning land claims 1796 Given generalship of the 5th brigade of the state militia 1798 Became agent and trustee of the Erie Land Company November 16, 1806 Died at Canterbury, Connecticut From the guide to the Moses Cleaveland Papers, 1780-1805, 1796-1805, (Western Reserve Historical Society)
