Born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey, S. Grover Cleveland was the son of Richard F. and Ann Neal Cleveland. When he was a small boy, the family moved to New York. Prevented by his father's death from attending college, Cleveland studied by himself and was admitted to the bar in Buffalo, New York in 1859. In succession he became assistant district attorney in 1863; sheriff, 1871; mayor, 1881; and governor of New York in 1882. Cleveland was nominated for president in 1884 and served two nonconsecutive terms, 1885-1889 and 1893-1897.
