Biographical History

Martin Luther King, Jr. (b. January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia –d. April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee) was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience. King helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. He was a graduate of Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University. He was assisnated in Mephis Tennessee.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. photographs consist of 156 positive monochrome photographic prints and 21 copy negatives assembled from a variety of sources, including Western Reserve Historical Society Picture Group 273, United Auto Workers, Local 45; The Cleveland Press collection of Cleveland State University; and former Press photographer, Mr. William S. Nehez. The collection was compiled for use in the audio-visual presentation for the 1989 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration at the Western Reserve Historical Society on January 18, 1989.

Martin Luther King, Jr. visited Cleveland, Ohio numerous times during his career as a civil rights leader. His first visit occurred in 1956 as the leader of the Montgomery bus boycott; his last visit to Cleveland was in early 1968, speaking to a small east side group. The photographs in this collection mainly reflect his visits in the mid-1960s.

At least four visits by Dr. King to Cleveland are depicted in these images. These include Dr. King's visit on May 14, 1963, to speak at Cory United Methodist Church. Earlier in the day, King spoke at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights [folders 5 and 6]. King returned to Cleveland on October 23, 1964, to participate in Cleveland's "Get out the Vote" drive in conjunction with United Auto Workers Local 45. King appeared at five street corner rallies, visited two schools, and spoke at Olivet Institutional Church [folders 5 and 6]. On March 23, 1965, local religious and civic leaders honored Dr. King with a testimonial dinner at the Sheraton-Cleveland Hotel. Members of the local branch of the NAAWP (National Association for the Advancement of White People) picketed the dinner [folders 1 and 2]. King visited Cleveland often during 1967, organizing tenant unions; boycotts of grocery stores; and encouraging voter registration and participation [folders 3,4,6 and 7].

The photographs also show some of the civil rights demonstrations that took place in the mid-1960s. Also included are portraits of persons honored at the Western Reserve Historical Society Black History Archives program celebrating Martin Luther King Day in 1989.
