Muir, Sir Robert (1864-1959: Knight, pathologist, Professor of Pathology, 1899-1936, Dean of Faculties, 1946-1949, University of Glasgow)

Robert Muir was born on the 5 July 1864 . He was educated at Hawick High School, Scottish Borders, Scotland; Teviot Grove Academy, Scottish Borders, and Edinburgh University, Scotland, where he graduated MA in 1884, MB ChB in 1888 and MD in 1890 , winning the Gold Medal for his thesis. In 1892, he was appointed Pathologist at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, a post he held for six years. He also became Senior Assistant to the Professor of Pathology at Edinburgh University in 1892 . Then, in 1894, he became the Lecturer on Pathological Bacteriology at the University. In 1898, he left Edinburgh and became Professor of Pathology at the University of St Andrews University at Dundee, Scotland. A year later he moved on again and was appointed Professor of Pathology at the University of Glasgow , Scotland, a post he held until 1936 . From 1946-1949 he was the University's Dean of the Faculties. Much respected in his field, he recieved his knighthood in 1934. Sir Robert Muir died on the 30 March 1959 in Edinburgh.
