Physicist. Fellow of the Royal Society.
Educated at Genera, Owens College, Manchester, Heidelberg. Ph. D. Heidelberg. He was professor of Physics in the University of Manchester 1888-1907. F. R. S. 1879. Secretary of Royal Society 1912-1919. Foreign Secretary of Royal Society 1920-1924. Royal Medal 1893. Rumford Medal 1926. President of British Association 1915. Copley Medallist R. S. 1931.

Born 1851 in Frankfurt-on-Main. In 1869 family moved to Manchester to escape Prussian annexation of Frankfurt. In 1871 he entered Owens College, Manchester. Ph.D. at Heidelberg. Fellow of the Royal Society, 1879; Professor of Applied Mathematics, Owens College, 1881; Langworthy Professor of Physics, Owens College, 1888; retired 1907 (succeeded by Rutherford). Knighted 1920.
