Biographical History
American inventor and promoter of rapid transit; served as a surgeon in the Union Army during the Civil War and was appointed Superintendent and Medical Director of the United States Army Hospitals. Gilbert left the medical profession following the war and entered the railroad business, making a special study of the rapid transit needs of New York City. Born in Guilford, New York; later a resident of New York City.
