Biographical History
Green Clay was born in Powhaton County, Virginia, and emigrated to Kentucky in 1777. A surveyor, he amassed a vast land estate, settling in Madison County. A Kentucky legislator and soldier, he served as major general in Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812. He raised the siege of Fort Meigs, Ohio, reinforcing the army of General William Henry Harrison.
Son of Charles Clay, was born in Powhatan Co., Va. Aug. 14, 1757. He learned everything in Kentucky under James Thompson. He was a member of the Convention of 1799 which formed the present Constitution of Kentucky, and long represented Madison County in the Kentucky Legislature. Appointed a brigadier general March 29, 1813, he led 3,000 Kentucky volunteers to the relief of Fort Meigs, of which Harrison left him in command. He was father of Cassius M. Clay. He did Oct. 31, 1826. Clay Co., Ky., was named in his honor. (from Va. Hist. Soc. Colls., N.S.X., 379) (Blue index cards)
