Biographical History
William J. Cable took part in the G. E. Fellowship in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers in 1955 at Purdue University. The objective of the program was to increase the Fellow's knowledge and understanding of mathematics and its application; to stimulate the Fellow's enthusiasm for the teaching of high school mathematics; to encourage and help the Fellows in counseling high school students to take mathematics courses; to provide the Fellows with specific mathematical ideas and materials for use inside and outside the classroom; to interest the Fellows in continuing to grow in their understanding and appreciation of mathematics and to increase their effectiveness as teachers and counselors. The six-week session was devoted to three courses (Mathematics 526 -- Applied Mathematical Analysis, Mathematics 550 -- Elements of Mathematical and Applied Statistics, Mathematics 585 -- Algebra and Geometry as Mathematical Systems), a seminar (on teaching and counseling), together with inspection trips to the General Electric Plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana and to various laboratories of Purdue University. Some special lectures were also arranged. The program was under the direction of Professor H. F. S. Jonah, and a teaching staff of members of the Purdue Department of Mathematics and the Statistical Laboratory. Graduate credit was given for each of the courses. William J. Cable taught at the University of Wisconsin-Steven Point from 1962-1992.
