Biographical History
The Association of University of Teachers was formed in 1919 with the aim of improving salaries and addressing issues affecting the profession. It is a trade union and professional association for lecturing staff, researchers, and other professional staff in higher education, including researchers, administrators, computer staff, and librarians. The Association works for its members nationally, through campaigns and central services. The donor John Chartres was National President of the AUT, 1986-1987.
The Association of University Teachers was founded in 1919 following a series of conferences, beginning in December 1917, of the Association of University Lecturers, which derived from the initiative of the Liverpool University Junior Staff Association founded in 1909.
