Biographical History
Nichols Goddard was a clock and watchmaker and a silversmith. He was born in Shrewsbury, Ma. on Oct. 4, 1773. He served an apprenticeship with his cousin, Luther Goddard. In 1797 Goddard and Benjamin Lord went into business together, manufacturing gold and silver wares in Rutland, Vt. The partnership lasted until 1807. In 1798 Goddard married Charity White in Northampton, Ma.; they had seven children. The Goddards were members of the East Parish Congregational Church in Rutland. Goddard served as town clerk in 1803 and town treasurer from 1805 to 1807. He was active in the Masonic order and served in the Grand Lodge of Vermont as Grand Junior Deacon in 1802 and Grand Senior Warden from 1804 to 1810. He died on Sept. 29, 1823.
