Biographical History
St. Philip's College was founded as St. Philip's Vocational Day School for Colored Children in 1898 (also known as St. Philip's Parochial Day School) in connection with St. Philip's Church. Under the leadership of Episcopalian Bishop James Steptoe Johnson, the school opened on 1 Mar. 1898 as a sewing class for girls, with fewer than twenty students. Artemisia Bowden was hired in 1902 as the third principal and led the institution for fifty-two years. The school became a junior college in 1942, and changed its name to St. Philip's College in 1950.
