Biographical History
Donald J. Sobol was born October 4, 1924, in New York, New York. He worked briefly as a newspaper reporter, but soon became a freelance author, writing both fiction and nonfiction for children. His nonfiction books include many biographies and other historical works. He has also written Two-Minute Mysteries, an internationally syndicated newspaper column, but is perhaps best know for his Encyclopedia Brown Series of mysteries. These are stories full of puns and other humor, and contain clues to help children solve the mystery. Solutions are printed in the back of the book. He has received a number of honors and awards for his work. Sobol has said, 'I never write fiction for children or adults to educate. I write to entertain. Messages I leave to others.' Biographical Sources: Something About the Author, vols. 1, 31, 73, 132 Children's Literature Review, vol. 4.
