Biographical History

A native of Australia, Patrick Squires was a charter member of the University of Nevada's Desert Research Institute and a pioneer in the study of cloud seeding. Born in 1914, Squires received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Melbourne in 1934 and a doctorate in 1959. He joined the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in 1937, and served as a Squadron Leader in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, working as a weather analyst. Following the war he joined the Radiophysics Division of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), working primarily in the area of cloud seeding. Coming to the United States in 1962, he worked as a program scientist at the National Center of Atmospheric Research (NCAR), where he also served as an adjunct professor at Colorado State University. In 1966 he was recruited by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Nevada to direct is Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics (LAP). During his tenure the laboratory conducted theoretical, experimental and field research in the physics of clouds, precipitation and aerosols. Other work focused on field programs in weather modification and air pollution. He returned to NCAR in 1977 as director of its Convective Storms Division. Dr. Squires retired to Reno in 1984 and died in 1990 at the age of 76.
