Gloria Montoya Chavez (Box 1, Folder 35)

Gloria Montoya Chavez, student, administrator and activist is a native New Mexican. Chavez earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in University Studies at the University of New Mexico and began graduate studies in Public Administration. Chavez became active in the Chicano Movement as a student. In her tenure at the University of New Mexico, Chavez worked at Chicano Studies and Chicano Student Services, also known as Hispanic Student Services from 1977 to 1989. In addition, Chavez worked as a community activist and founded the Estudiantes por la Cultura on the University of New Mexico campus and acted as the advisor to United Mexican American Students (UMAS) organization when it was reinstated in 1987. Chavez had an active role in the regional organizing of Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition and was invited to be present in South Carolina at the announcement of Jackson’s candidacy. Chavez also served as a recruiter, activity coordinator and supervisor at the University of New Mexico’s Upward Bound Program from 1990 to 2005.
