Eva Le Gallienne (1899-1991) was an actress, producer, director, translator, teacher and writer.

Eva Le Gallienne was born January 11, 1899, in London, England. She attended College Sevigne, Paris, France, 1907-14, and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, England, 1914. She had a career and an actress and director, receiving numerous awards. Her writing career included adaptation of plays, translation of titles, and author of two memoirs. She contributed articles and reviews to numerous periodicals. In 1986, Ronald Reagan presented her with the National Medal of Arts. She died June 3, 1991 at Westom, CT. Eva Le Gallienne was born 11 Jan 1899 in London, the daughter of poet and journalist Richard Le Gallienne and Danish journalist Julie Noiregard. Le Gallienne attended drama school for a few months, then moved to New York in 1915. Her first success on stage was at age 20 and was followed by other hits. She abandoned her acting career in 1926 and founded the Civic Repertory Theatre, which closed in 1933. Thirty-two of the thirty-four plays presented there were directed by Le Gallienne. She also starred on Broadway in L'Aiglon with Ethel Barrymore, and translated, staged, and acted in Ibsen's Rosmersholm. She moved with her companion Marion Evensen to a country estate and continued to lecture, tour, and act. Le Gallienne played Queen Elizabeth in Mary Stuart from 1957 to 1962. She won the National Medal of Arts in 1986. Le Gallienne died June of 1991.

Ms. Le Gallienne also taught acting at the White Barn Theatre and gave a series of lectures on tour.

In 1941 she produced and directed AH, WILDERNESS!

In 1946 with Cheryl Crawford and Margaret Webster she founded the American Repertory Theatre. Eva Le Gallienne toured in THE CORN IS GREEN which opened at New York City Center in 1950. She also toured with the National Repertory Theatre in the play MARY STUART. Other touring productions include THE SEAGULL and RING AROUND THE MOON.
