The Michigan Museum Association was incorporated as a non-profit organization on Dec. 15, 1971. It was created for the promotion of educational goals within the state. The Association has three major objectives: promote professional communications between all types of museums, public as well as private within the state; promote statewide public awareness of the value of museums as educational and research institutions; and solicit or receive grants, contributions, plus properties for the financial well-being of the Association.

The MMA was organized in 1952, but the program as it exists today did not come about until its incorporation as a non-profit organization on Dec. 15, 1971. It was created for the promotion of educational goals within the state. The MMA has 3 major objectives: promote professional communications between all types of museums, public as well as private within the state; promote statewide public awareness of the value of museums as educational and research institutions; and solicit or receive grants, contributions, plus properties for the financial well-being of the MMA. From 1978 to 1981, MMA employed Dolores Slowinski as the executive director. This position was abolished in 1981 because of funding difficulties. This collection, for the most part, documents those years.
