Biographical History

Artist, art critic. Haefliger studied at the Julian Ashton School, Sydney, and in London, Europe, India and Japan. Married to painter Jean Bellette, he returned to Sydney in 1939 and worked on 'Art in Australia'. In the early 40's, Haefliger was appointed art critic for the Sydney Morning Herald, and supported the modernist ideas brought back to Australia by returning expatriates such as Dobell, Passmore, Friend and Drysdale. After 1957 Haefliger and his wife lived in Switzerland, Spain, France and Australia, alternating between countries. He wrote the introduction to 'Russell Drysdale', Sydney 1960. From 'The Encyclopedia of Australian Art', 1994.
