Biographical History

George W. Jones was an employee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He was born on October 17, 1868, and began work as a common powderman in the Upper Yard of the Brandywine Works on May 22, 1890, and after several promotions was eventually employed in the Powder Testing Bureau. From 1902 to 1916 he and his family lived in the Charles I. du Pont house (b. 1823) in Henry Clay Village, the workers' community adjoining the yards. He was an accomplished violinist and a member of the company's Tankopanicum Orchestra. He retired at the end of 1927 and died on February 26, 1938.

Ethel Louella Jones, his second child, was born on February 24, 1900. She was employed for seven years as a teacher in the local school system, at which point she married J. Courtney Hayward, a Methodist minister, and devoted her subsequent working life to church and charitable work. She died on December 30, 1994.
