Biographical History

Andrew K. Long served on the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 (Senior commander Charles Wilkes), as commander of the store ship Relief . With a fleet of six vessels, the expedition was commissioned on a world voyage of hydrography and exploration that included forays into the Southern Ocean. The ships regrouped during April 1839 in the Chilean port of Valparaiso, sailing to Callao shortly afterwards. On arrival at Callao, several sick and disaffected members of the expedition transferred to Relief and Long, in command sailed home to the United States, arriving in New York on 28 March 1840. Long retired from the Navy in 1864 and died circa 1866.
