Biographical History
Wider Opportunities for Women was formed in the District of Columbia in 1964. Its early training programs focused on basic job skills for low-income women and included provisions for childcare. In 1990 WOW received federal funding to develop the National Employment Training (NET) Project and gained widespread recognition for its advocacy, leadership development, and technical training workshops, which were organized to meet the needs of trainees and employers. Subsequent funding enabled WOW to train and place women in NTO apprenticeships and highway construction jobs. WOW also organized and participated in federal, state, and local projects that addressed economic self-sufficiency, workforce development, welfare reform, and illiteracy.

Founded in 1964 as Washington Opportunities for Women, Wider Opportunities for Women seeks to expand employment opportunities for women through information, employment training, and advocacy services. It works to overcome barriers to women's employment and economic equity, such as occupational segregation, sex stereotyped education and training, discrimination in employment practices and wages, and lack of appropriate dependent care.
