Biographical History
A native of Boston, Mass., Charles H. Wheelwright completed his medical training at Harvard University and was a protégé of Dr. George C. Shattuck, a longtime professor of medicine at Harvard. After graduation he entered the U.S. Navy and was commissioned assistant surgeon in 1839. With the navy he traveled extensively in South America and worked in the naval hospital at Pensacola, Fla., until ill health forced him to take a leave of absence. During the Civil War he served as fleet surgeon aboard the San Jacinto and later took charge of a naval hosipital in Pilotstown, La., where, weakened by dengue fever, he died in 1862.
