Biographical History
Paul Zsolnay began preparation for the founding of the publishing company in Vienna in 1923, and Werfel's novel Verdi: Roman einer Oper (1924) became the company's first publication. Zsolnay was Werfel's publisher from 1923 until 1938; after Werfel's exile from Austria following the Anschluss, Gottfried Bermann Fischer became his new publisher. Costa and Polak were directors of Paul Zsolnay Verlag at different points, and Halasz and Horch also worked for the company. Richard Simon and M. Lincoln Schuster were the founders of Simon & Schuster. Ben Huebsch was the head of Viking Press. Simon & Schuster and Viking Press published English translations of Werfel's works. Heinemann & Zsolnay was a company that Paul Zsolnay founded in England, after his emigration following the Anschluss.
