Liddell, Anna Forbes, 1891-1979

Anna Forbes Liddell was born in 1891 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Liddell received her A.B. in 1918 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.A. at Cornell. She completed a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in 1925 with a dissertation entitled "Alexander's Space, Time, and Deity". Liddell taught history and philosophy at Chowman College in North Carolina. For nearly forty years, 1926-1962, she taught in the Philosophy and Religion Department at Florida State College for Women (FSCW, now Florida State University), serving as the department head for most of that time. She was the first professor at FSCW to teach an accredited course via closed circuit television. In 1930 she studied for a year in Heidelberg with Professor Ernst Hoffmann. She translated Nicholas of Cusa's De Docta Ignorantia. From 1959-1960 Liddell was the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Philosophy. Liddell died on August 30, 1979 in Tallahassee, Fl.
