Biographical History

Childs was born in Henniker, N.H. in 1884, the son of Richard Lane and Kate Marion Childs. He attended Dartmouth College, receiving his A.B. degree in 1906 and his A.M. degree in 1907. He received his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1914. From 1909 to 1913 Childs was an instructor of English at Dartmouth College. In 1913 he became an assistant professor of English, and in 1920 he became a full professor of English. In 1946 he was named Winkley Professor of Anglo-Saxon and English language and literature, a position he held until his retirement in 1954. He died in Hanover, N.H. in 1973.
