Biographical History
Plantation owner Georgetown District, South Carolina and South Carolina Senator. Colonel Joshua John Ward married Joanna Douglas Hasell (1805-1878) in 1825. Born at Brookgreen Plantation, Ward amassed a large estate in part by reinvesting profits in land and slaves. Ward's estate eventually included a number of plantations and over 1,000 slaves (S.C. census, 1850). After his death in 1853 Ward's son Joshua apparently managed his plantations.
