Biographical History
The office of Vice President for Academic Affairs was created in 1973 as part of a major reorganization of the University of Utah central administration. The office assumed the duties of three former positions: Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Academic Vice President. At a later date, both the office of Provost and that of Vice President for Student Affairs were reinstated. During the period covered by these records, Pete D. Gardner (1973-1977), Cedric Davern (1977-1983), and Irwin Altman (1983-1986) served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Charles H. Monson was named the first Deputy Academic Vice President in 1966. In 1967, the name was changed to Associate Academic Vice President. In 1973, the office of Academic Vice President became part of the new office of Vice President for Academic Affairs in a major administrative reorganization. Orlando A. Rivera served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1974 to 1984.
The office of Associate Vice President was primarily responsible for liason with the Council of Academic Deans and oversight of affirmative action and Title IX compliance, auxiliary faculty appointments, and teaching assistants/teaching fellows programs.
