Charles Arthur Jean, (1886-1971) locally served as county chairman of the Union County Republican Committee from 1926-1952 and 1943-1952 was a member of the executive committee of the Illinois Republican County Chairman's Association. Subsequently, he served as a member of the Republican State Central Committee from the 25th District, 1952-1960. At the state level, Jean was appointed a member of the new Illinois Super-Highway Commission in 1943. In 1957 he was appointed to be the special consultant to the State Department of Finance. In addition, Jean participated in national politics by serving as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1948.
Earlier in life he had owned a food brokerage Company in Anna, Jean & Co., which at one time was the largest sugar brokerage concern in the Midwest. Jean was active in community affairs. He was a member of the Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church and the Masonic Order, Ainad Shrine. In addition, Jean served at various times as a member of the Anna Fair Board and as a member of the Anna School Board. During the Depression he was chairmen of a local committee to dispense emergency food and clothing to the needy, and during World War II was chairman of the local draft board. For a time, he served as postmaster in Anna. At the age of 84, Charles A. Jean died in Anna on March 8, 1971.
