John Gluyas (1796-1858), an English-born mining engineer who worked in Wales, immigrated to the United States and in 1835 settled in Mecklenburg County, N.C., where he worked on various mining projects, ran a gristmill on the Catawba River, and became a large landowner. He was involved particularly with the Mecklenburg Gold Mining Company and the McCulloch Mine. Gluyas was married to Mary Bennetts, 1824, with whom he had three children who survived infancy: John Bennetts (born 1825), Thomas (born 1826), and William (born 1832).
