Biographical History

Henry Perkins Salter was a Portsmouth, New Hampshire, ship owner and agent. During the 1830s, Salter's vessels, the brigs Columbus and Agrila and the ships Huron and Montgomery, plied both coastal and transatlantic trade routes. The vessels carried cotton, tobacco, sugar, and salt from Boston and New York to New Orleans, Savannah, Mobile, and Charleston. They also sailed to numerous European and Caribbean ports, including Liverpool, Le Havre, Antwerp, Cadiz, and Havana.
