Biographical History
Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, Florida. The institution was chartered in 1851 and has been state-assisted since 1857. It operated under several different names until 1909, when it became Florida State College for Women. In 1947, the name was changed to Florida State University and the institution was made coeducational. It is part of the State University System which is part of the Division of Universities in the Dept. of Education. The university president is appointed by the Board of Regents.
Bernard Francis Sliger served as President of Florida State University from 1977 to 1991. He was born in Trout Creek, Michigan on September 30, 1924. Sliger majored in economics and received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University. He was a faculty member and administrator at Florida State, Michigan State, Louisiana State, and Southern University. Dr. Sliger was Executive Vice President of Florida State University from 1972-1976; Interim President in 1976; and was appointed President in 1977. His administration was marked by the expansion of the engineering curriculum, research activities, and athletics program at Florida State University. After his retirement in 1991, Dr. Sliger was appointed President Emeritus. He served briefly as Interim President again in Fall, 1993.
