Biographical History
From 1990 to 1995, Paul Baldasare, Jr., served as legal assistant to the University's Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Relations.
From 1990 to 1995, Paul Baldasare, Jr., served as legal assistant to the university's Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Relations. For most of his tenure, Baldasare's title was Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, and Associate University Counsel. He worked primarily with contracts and other legal issues related to events planned by the university as part of its Bicentennial celebration. The celebration had two components: the Bicentennial Campaign and the Bicentennial Observance.
The Bicentennial Campaign was a four-year fundraising campaign. Its initial goal of $320 million was surpassed, and a new goal of $400 million and established and met. The campaign kickoff took place on 11 October 1991 at a dinner emceed by Charles Kuralt and attended by donors, potential donors, university officials, and alumni. It featured performances by James Taylor and a choral group of 150-200 North Carolina schoolchildren.
The Bicentennial Observance was a series of commemorative events that began on University Day (12 October) 1993 and ended with the Commencement (15 May) of 1994. The university commissioned artwork, documentaries, and other programs designed to explore its history and commemorate its 200th anniversary. The University Day 1993 program included a speech by President Clinton and a performance by the North Carolina Symphony of Richard Adler's The University of North Carolina Bicentennial Commemorative Suite, a work written specifically for the event.
In August 1995, the position of Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations was eliminated. In April 1996, an administrative reorganization of the university took place, and the position of Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement was created. Pursuant to these changes, Baldasare's duties were revised and he became Associate University Counsel and Director, Government Relations.
