Biographical History

Sir David Dundas (1799-1877), politician, the eldest surviving son of James Dundas of Ochtertyre, Perthshire, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of William Graham of Airth, Stirlingshire, was born in Edinburgh. From 1840-1852 and 1861-1867, Dundas represented Sutherland as a liberal. On 10 July 1846, he was appointed solicitor-general under Lord John Russell, receiving the customary knighthood on 4 Feb. 1847. In May 1849 he again took office, this time as judge advocate-general. An accomplished scholar, Dundas lived a retired life at his chambers in the Inner Temple, where he brought together a fine library. He died unmarried at his chambers on 30 March 1877.
