Biographical History
Thomas Johnes (1748-1816) was a 19th century Member of Parliament, landscape architect, farmer, printer, writer and social benefactor. From 1783 on he and his family were landowners of the Hafod Estate in Wales, where he was active in local life, building a church and school for his tenants, establishing a thriving farm and dairy, and encouraging the construction of roads and bridges in surrounding Cardiganshire. He was elected a Member of Parliament ten times between 1775 and 1812, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1800. He started a private press, Hafod Press, which published several of his own works, including translations into English of Froissart's The Chronicles of England, France, and Spain and De Joinville's Memoirs of Saint Louis .
