Biographical History

The Academic Freedom Committee was established in the spring of 1951 under a grant from Louis Rabinowitz to study this subject, with professor Robert M. McIver, professor emeritus, political philosophy and sociology, as chairman. The work of the committee resulted in the publication of several works, including MacIver, Robert, ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN OUR TIME, Columbia University Press, 1955; and Hofstadter, Richard and Metzger, Walter, THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN THE U.S.
